COSTS
How do the costs of the agreement relate to previous subscription-only agreements with the publisher? |
Cost decrease |
Comments on cost development | Fee reduction for the first year. For the second year (and the optional third year), a moderate annual increase applies. Institutional fees also dependent on the selected collection: a collection upgrade fee applies for those changing from the Premier 2022 to the Premier 2025 collection. |
FINANCIAL SHIFT
Transformative agreements vary by their transformative mechanisms, meaning the way in which financing is shifted from the subscription side to open access publishing. What are the characteristics of this agreement to this regard? |
Subscriptions fully converted to OA publishing fees (access related costs 5% or less) |
RISK SHARING
How do entitlements for open access publishing correlate to the anticipated article output? Which mechanisms for risk sharing have been agreed in cases of exceeding or not reaching the number of OA publishing entitlements? |
There is uncapped OA publishing in hybrid journals, while articles in fully OA (Gold) journals will either receive a 20% discount on the APC or be fully covered depending on the model chosen by institutions |

ACCESS COSTS

5%-20% |
Comments on access costs | Read/Publish split not provided by Sage. However, our historical subscription spend has been rather high. |
ACCESS COVERAGE
Are all read relevant journals covered by the agreement? |
Yes |
PERPETUAL ACCESS RIGHTS | Yes |
WORKFLOW ASSESSMENT | Ok |
Comments on workflows | Good workflow compared to many other publishers: both OA and CC BY uptake nearly 100%. Mistakes rarely happen, and when they do, Sage is usually quick to take action to correct things. |
OVERALL ASSESSMENT AND COMMENTS | This agreement is particularly important for authors in the field of humanities and social sciences, and Sage was clearly willing to listen to our concerns. However, while the agreement reduces and constrains costs, the pricing is not sustainable in the long run given the financial pressures facing the sector. |
